It’s been a drier than usual September in Fairfax, but there’s still a lot more of fall to go. Although homeowners don’t often think about their roofing system in the fall, they should be. Between falling leaves, gusty winds and the upcoming winter, roof maintenance at this time of year is more important than virtually any other time.

What Do We Mean By “Roofing System”?

Although your shingles are the biggest, and most visible, part of your roof, they can’t do their job without the rest of your roofing system. In addition to your shingles, it’s comprised of underlayment, roofing deck, soffits, fascia, and gutters as well as gutter covers. When your gutters are clogged, rainwater backs up onto your roof causing bent shingles and deteriorates your underlayment and roofing deck. If your soffits and fascia aren’t in good condition, your home has entry points for pests to nest for the winter which can cause a myriad of damages.

Three Things You Should Do Before Winter

  1. Clean Your Roof – Leaves and other debris on your roof hastens deterioration of the shingles. It also contributes to the unsightly streaking and staining on a roof. Of course, when a big rain comes through anything on your roof will likely end up in your gutters leading to clogged gutters.
  2. Clean Your Gutters – Clean gutters protect your home by ensuring that rainwater and snowmelt flows down the downspouts and away from your foundation. Clogged gutters can lead to damaged roofs from ice damming in the freeze-thaw cycle.
  3. Inspect Your Roofing System – Remember, that means looking at more than just the shingles. See if your gutters have holes, are hanging precariously from the roof’s edge or missing parts. Check that your soffits run continuously under your eaves without cracks or holes. Your fascia should be without deterioration. Go in your attic and look for signs of a roof leak like streaking on your roof deck or compressed or even wet insulation.
