Asphalt shingles consist of two basic types:
- Composition shingles are made of organic felt manufactured from wood and paper fibers.
- Fiberglass-base shingles are made of manmade fiberglass mat. These shingles are more fire-resistant than the organic ones.
Wood Shakes and Shingles
Shakes are more rustic, rough-hewn shingle, whereas wood shingles are smooth.
Shingles and shakes can be applied directly over some existing roofing materials,
such as asphalt shingles or a previous layer of wood shingles.
Standing Seam (Steel/Metal)
A metal roof adds beauty, character and real curb appeal to your home. There
are a wide variety of colors available. A metal roof will last the lifetime
of your home.
Aluminum
Extremely lightweight, this is the material used in much residential metal
roofing. It won't rust, but must be painted or coated for appearance. Coatings
are similar to those used on steel. Environmentalists express concerns about
using this precious resource for purposes such as roofing.
Copper
Will not rust, has no "finish" to scratch or peel, and weathers
naturally to a beautiful verdigris patina. Unfortunately, it's very expensive.
Simulated slate products seek to combine the textured good looks of authentic slate with the durable strength of proven technologies and composite materials, and a lower price than actual slate.
Slate
This beautiful, natural product is available in a variety of colors and
shapes. It has an extremely long service life. This is the most costly of
all roofing materials.
